Easter Eggs in Mexico

In Mexico there isn't any Easter Egg dye. So you have to make your own natural dye. We used things we found in the kitchen such as turmeric, hibiscus and beets.
We put the raw eggs in with the colour, then brought it to a boil until the eggs were hard cooked. We thought the hibiscus would turn purple-ish red, the turmeric would be orange and the beets would be red.
We were wrong! The greyish one was the hibiscus (I thought it looked like a dinosaur egg), the tan one was beet and the yellow one was turmeric. Who knew??
They still tasted good, even if they looked strange.

Later we finished off with a book we read every Easter, The Country Bunny and the Little Gold Shoes.

Maia, your eggs looked beautiful. It is nice to see unusual colours.

When I was about your age I had a neighbour who used to dye her own wool (to spin it and use it for weaving). I remember boiling lichen to get the most beautiful green colour. It sure didn't smell very good though. :)

Did you like the book? It looks interesting.

It looks like we are going to have a lot of rain for our easter. I think the bunnies will be drier in your part of the world! ;)

Dear Lynne,
The Country Bunny is a pretty good book. What type of lichen did you boil? It's raining again in Vancouver? Thanks for reading my blog.

We are having really crazy weather at the moment. If we wait 5 minutes the weather will change. So far today we have had a downpour, sun, hail and now more sun. It definitely feels like Spring weather up here.

I can't remember what kind of lichen we used. My neighbour had it boiling in the pot by the time I got to her house.

Did you know that I have a new puppy? Her name is Ellie and she is a 10 week old standard poodle. She has dark red hair and really long legs. She hasn't quite figured out how to be graceful yet, she is still taking face dives and running into things. It is pretty funny to watch! :)

I love reading your blog and am always happy when I see a new post. It is so nice to see what a great time you are having in your new life.

Hugs & Kisses,
Auntie Lynne

Hey Maia!

This looks like something we'd try too. Did the eggs taste with the different flavors at all?

We like reading your posts and seeing the pictures. The girls still talk about sleeping over on your boat and how much fun they had.

Maia,

I would like to try some dyes from nature sometime -- it looks like fun!

But I had to comment here because that book is one of my favorites. I remember reading it when I was a kid, and now I get to read it to my own kids.
